Bob,
I experimented yesterday for several hours with macros in Word 2016 and again today. Here is what I have found:
1. It is possible to create and save macros, but Word 2016 does not work like Word 2011 at all when it comes to creating and saving macros in a document.
If you create a set of simple macros and save them, they must be saved as .docm files; they cannot be saved as .docx files as in Word 2011. And, if you are not careful to remember, the program automatically saves everything as a regular .docx file, and your macros will be gone.
2. Word 2016 does not work like Word 2011 when it comes to creating and saving macros in any of your templates, including the 'Normal' template
If you create a Normal macro-enabled template—naming it Normal.dotm—you are able to save your macros in the template. But, as soon as you close it up and open up a new document or an existing document, that you know had macros embedded in it, they are gone.
You must save the document as a .dotm, not .dotx file. If you are not careful and happen to save the template as a .dotx file, all your macros will be removed from the template. Yes, the program does warn you that if you continue to save, your macros will be removed. But, what little help that may be is entirely eclipsed by the frustration you harbor at having to do this every time, day in day out. Forget to switch to .dotm just once, and all the macros are irretrievably gone. And, the next time you open any document built upon your template, will be absolutely devoid of your macros.
But, wait... It gets worse: Even if you create a new Normal.dotm template, and save it several simple macros— e.g., a macro calling for a certain font or formatting—e.g., bold or italics— those macros cannot be found when called up. The only way you can get your macros that you know are in the document is to go the the pull-down menu at the top of the software frame, select 'open'; then, unhide or otherwise locate the Library folder and go to: Library —> Group Containers —> UBF8T346G9.Office —> User Content (I tried placing it here...) —> Templates (...but, here gives the same result). Open the template, and the macros will be there. But, if you try opening that template any other way, there will be no macros! Unbelievable!
Question: Is there a way to create and preserve macros in Word 2016 created new and saved old documents without fighting the battle I have described above?
Background: I am a college professor. I have hundreds of documents that I created and that I use all the time in my work. Most of these documents are lectures, some is research for publication. The majority of the lectures, if not all are based upon a particular 'Lecture' template that I modify from time to time. They are probably 40-50 keystroke commands in this template (hence, in all the lectures themselves) that I use all the time along with the embedded macros.
Conclusion: I am convinced that Microsoft hates Visual Basic and macros. I know nothing about the VBE, and unless I can learn it in and don't want to know anything. Microsoft's GUI recording and saving functions were (and still are) good enough for me. But, instead of friendly backwards compatibility, Microsoft is always leaving us in the lurch when it comes out with a new or revised product. It is almost like they have declaredwar! on macros and those who really like them. Why?!! I remember the previous war Microsoft waged on macros and macro users some years ago. Finally, they relented at some point--I don't remember when the truce was signed and we were given back our macros and true macro capability.
Plea: Bob, if you can help me overcome the problems described above, I will be very grateful. Or, if you can point me in the right direction toward resolution, that would be splendid. I believe there are other Word 2016 for Mac users out there who are just as frustrated as I am. The only good thing about Office 2016 for Mac so far is that I didn't have to pay for it personally. My school pays for a campus license for students, faculty, and staff. If I had to pay for this software, I would be feeling worse than I do. I do not look forward to the tedium that may be coming. When school begins again in January, unless there are some answers, I will be using Word 2011 for the next 6 months.
With sincerity and in the spirit of good will.
